Stainless, the Material of Choice
Offering good thermal conductivity, excellent resistance to corrosion, fire and heat, low density and easy formability, stainless steel has become the material of choice for many heating and climatization applications. Thanks to our wide range of stainless steel grades, Aperam has a solution to meet even the most demanding applications. Our ferritic stainless steels (K09, K41, K44, K45) are particularly well-suited for HVAC systems.

Applications
Brased Heat Exchangers
As the heat exchanger industry strives towards greater efficiency, higher product purity and increased productivity, the amount of stainless steel used in industrial heat exchange equipment continues to increase. Aperam works directly with heat exchanger manufacturers and users to understand their challenges and develop solutions that satisfy actual and future needs.
Condensing Gas Boilers
Our new application for heat exchangers in condensing gas boilers builds on the success of our K41 niobium/titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel for automotive exhaust systems. Used with heat exchangers, this grade increases the application’s resistance to corrosion, temperature oxidation, thermal fatigue and creep. It also lowers maintenance needs and thus increases the exchanger’s lifespan.
Hot Water Tanks
Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, stainless steel is quickly becoming the material of choice for water heater tanks. Conventional models are made from enamelled carbon steel. However, its glass-like protective layer may develop cracks. Stainless steel, by contrast, is intrinsically corrosion resistant in drinking water.
Burners
Stainless steel is renowned for its high temperature resistance, which is why it’s the material of choice for domestic and industrial boilers, catering burners, furnaces and fuel cells. Thanks to its high level of niobium, our K44M grade is particularly well-suited for applications that operate at high temperatures and undergo regular start/stop cycles.
Heat Plate Exchangers
Aperam works directly with heat exchanger manufacturers and users to understand their challenges and develop solutions that satisfy actual and future needs.
Domestic Solar
Thanks to its unique combination of corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal, ferritic stainless steels are the material of choice for domestic solar applications. Its unique mechanical properties also make stainless steel well-suited for solar applications. Manufacturers benefit from the material’s excellent workability and weldability and end-users appreciate its long lifespan, ease-of-use and low-maintenance requirements.
Chimney Flues
With a low expansion coefficient and good thermal conductivity, ferritic stainless steels are a high-performance solution for new flue pipes and for lining existing flues. Not only does stainless steel eliminate corrosion, it is also exceptionally light. Adaptable to all hearth configurations, stainless steel flues are regularly used in private homes, collective housing, industrial buildings and offices.
HVAC
Aperam’s K09, K41, K44 and K45 grades of ferritic stainless steels are the material of choice for HVAC systems (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning). Offering excellent corrosion resistance, these grades increase a system’s lifespan while decreasing maintenance costs. They also have the advantage of good thermal conductivity, fire and heat resistance, low component weight and easy formability.
Heat plate exchangers
New regulations, new technologies and new concepts require that heat exchanger manufacturers think outside the box. As a result, a new generation of heat exchangers demands material solutions that can reduce weight, resist corrosion and cut costs. That material is Stainless Steel.
Gas boilers exchangers
The advantages of using ferritic Stainless Steel for the exchangers found in condensing gas boilers are almost too many to list. For starters, using a ferritic stainless like Aperam’s K41 grade renders the exchangers more resistant to corrosion, thermal fatigue, and creep. It also makes them easier to maintain. And did we mention that stainless steel oxidizes slower than other commonly used materials? This means a longer lifespan for the exchanger and an opportunity to reduce its weight.
